Penrith is a city on the western fringe of the Sydney metropolitan area, in east central New South Wales, Australia. Penrith is approximately 54 kilometres by road west of Sydney. The local government boundaries of the City of Penrith cover an area of some 407 square kilometres on the Nepean River flats of the Cumberland Plain. The Blue Mountains rise at the western border of the City area.
The highway and M4 Freeway cross the area from east to west. There are two large areas to the north and south of the residential areas, mostly used for agricultural purposes. The Penrith Local Government Area has two Central Business Districts at Penrith and St.Marys.
St Marys, is located on the eastern side of the Penrith Local Government Area. Its western boundary is South Creek with the M4 Motorway as its southern boundary. Marsden Road and Sydney Street divides this suburb from the smaller suburbs of Colyton and Oxley Park on its eastern boundary. Its northern section takes in the previously named industrial suburb of Dunheved. St Marys has a long and rich industrial and agricultural history including tanneries and munitions.
Erskine Park, is located on the eastern fringe of the Penrith Local Government Area. The eastern boundary is Ropes Creek to the south where the southern boundary is located along the Sydney Water Supply Pipeline. The suburb's western border runs along Mamre Road and the Erskine Park Road till the M4 Motorway and up to Ropes Creek. A new housing development during the 1990s has greatly changed this suburb. Its history has been largely rural with some extractive industries in recent years.
